Neither is universally better

Onshore projects can be developed in more places with mature logistics and easier maintenance access. Offshore projects can deliver very large blocks of power near coastal load centers while avoiding some land constraints.

The right choice depends on resource quality, land or seabed access, environmental effects, community priorities, transmission, supply infrastructure and the cost of finance. A technology comparison without those system conditions is incomplete.

Is offshore wind more efficient than onshore wind?

Offshore projects often achieve higher capacity factors because of stronger, steadier winds and larger turbines, but ‘efficient’ can also refer to cost, materials or land use. The project context matters.

Why are offshore wind turbines larger?

Marine transport avoids some road and bridge constraints, and higher project infrastructure costs reward more energy per turbine position. Ports and installation vessels still set practical limits.

Is onshore wind cheaper?

Onshore wind generally has lower construction and operating complexity. Project cost varies by market, resource, grid connection, financing and site conditions.
